UNG NORDISK MUSIK 2020: Tampere
Apply until June 15th 2019 !
Application form
Ung Nordisk Musik is a festival for young composers, sound artists and performance artists based in any of the Nordic countries. In 2020 the festival will be held 24.-30.8. in Tampere, Finland.
In the Finnish call for works, seven participants get selected to have one of their works performed at the festival. The selected participants are provided with travel and accommodation for the duration of the festival. Alongside concerts, the festival program includes workshops, lectures and masterclasses. An important part of the festival experience is the opportunity to network and meet with other Nordic colleagues.
There is no stylistic criteria. Experimental / Instrumental / Electronic / Installation / Multimedia / Performance-based works will all be taken into consideration.
APPLICATION RULES
A jury of three people will choose the participating works anonymously. The jury will be kept secret until the selection is made public in September 2019. The jury is assembled by an independent expert appointed by UNM Finland.
The application form along with all the separate attachments must be sent by 15th June 2019 at 23:59. Late entries and entries failing to meet the requirements listed below will not be considered by the jury. The applications are sent anonymously with a pseudonym. The real name of the applicant cannot be stated anywhere apart from the online application form. Please make sure you substitute your name with your pseudonym everywhere on the application materials.
The festival implements a gender quota. The quota determines the gender-ratio of the participants to 3/4 (3/7 = 42 %). In other words, either 4 male and 3 non-male participants – or vice versa – will be selected for the festival. The participants make their gender known in the application form – male, female or other. More information about the quota and the selection process can be found here.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Seven composers/sound artists will be chosen to represent Finland at the festival. All applicants born on June 15th 1989 or after are eligible. You can also apply if you are a full-time student on June 15th 2019, and you do not have a previous Master’s degree in music or the arts. The applicants must either have Finnish citizenship or be residents in Finland. Citizens or residents of other Nordic countries can apply to their respective call for works in Denmark, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden.
Applicants can apply to represent only one Nordic country, even if they meet the application criteria in several countries. Applicants must therefore choose in which country they apply. If someone applies in several countries, all of their applications will be disqualified.
You can participate in the UNM festival five times at most. Also participants of the UNM-festival in Piteå 2019 cannot participate in this year's call for works. They can apply again in the call for the 2021 festival, which will be opened in May 2020.
HOW TO APPLY?
You can apply with sound art works, performances and installations, or with a work for any instrumental combination such as chamber ensemble, sinfonietta, string orchestra, choir or solo. You can also apply with a tape piece, or with a piece that involves live-electronics, or with a work that any other kind of concept not mentioned here.
UNM will book everything needed for the perfomance of the selected works – the performers, the spaces and technical equipment – based on the works themselves. This being the case, the following line-ups have been preliminarily booked for the Tampere festival.
Tampering Ensemble. Instrumentation of this ensemble is 2.1.1.0/1.1.0.1/guit/pno/acc/perc/2.1.1.1. and a soprano. You can also apply with bigger and smaller chamber works.

Electroacoustic ensemble.
We are forming a new electro-acoustic ensemble that includes both performers and technicians. The rehearsal process of the selected works will be guided by the lecturer of Music Technology Alejandro Olarte. We encourage you to apply with ambitious live-electronic/fixed media works since professional assistance for realizing the works will be provided for you.
ELECTRONIC APPLICATION
The Finnish call for works is entirely electronic.
You may apply with two works at most (although only one work per applicant can be selected to the festival). The same pseudonym should be used when submitting several works. If a work chosen to the festival has to be withdrawn due to practical reasons, another piece by the applicant may be performed instead, if it is included in the jury's selection. If this is not possible, the first runner up will be chosen.

Other - Send a written description of the work, including a tech rider, and attachments (e.g. sound, image, video, text), that will help the jury assess the work.
Please be in touch with the UNM Finland board members with any questions regarding the application, the online form or the attachments. The board members do not participate in the selection and will gladly help you through the application process. Please do not leave your questions to the last minute.
The applicant commits to sending all materials electronically to the festival organisers if they get chosen. The version of the submitted work selected by the jury will be performed at the festival.
The Finnish UNM board members Lauri, Matilda and Dante will gladly answer to any queries you may have regarding the application and the festival.
Good luck!
Best regards,
Matilda Seppälä, Lauri Supponen and Dante Thelestam
